For example, it was once believed that vitamin D was important only for bone health.

Which Type of Fish Oil is Best?

Fish oil supplements come in three different forms:

  1. Triglyceride

    A triglyceride is a molecule that consists of three fatty acids and one molecule of glycerol, which is a colorless, odorless substance found in fats and oils.

    This is the natural (unprocessed) form of fish oil.

  2. Ethyl ester

    The ethyl ester form of fish oil is created by processing natural triglycerides to remove the glycerol molecules and replace them with ethanol (alcohol).

    This is done to remove impurities and concentrate the fish oil, thereby raising the levels of EPA and DHA per gram of oil.

    While this may sound positive (and is often touted as a selling point), and plenty of studies have proven the benefits of supplementation with fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), it’s not without drawbacks, which we’ll discuss in a minute.

  3. Reesterified triglyceride

    The reesterified triglyceride form is chemically similar to the natural form, and it’s created by using special enzymes to convert ethyl ester oil back into triglyceride oil.

    This adds expense but improves the quality and bioavailability of the oil.

Out of these three forms, you’d probably assume a natural triglyceride supplement is the best choice.

Well, natural triglyceride oils are viable options but they have two significant drawbacks:

  1. Due to the low level of processing, they can have much higher levels of contaminants than ethyl ester and reesterified triglyceride oils.

  2. They’re often low in EPA and DHA compared to ethyl ester and reesterified triglyceride oils, which means you have to take more to produce results.

    For example, you’d be hard-pressed to find a high-quality triglyceride oil that provides more than 1,200 milligrams of EPA and DHA per 5 grams of oil.

    This is expensive in both dollars and calories.

So, while the pros of natural triglyceride fish oil certainly outweigh the cons, let’s see how it stacks up against ethyl ester and reesterified triglyceride oils.

Ethyl ester is the most popular form of fish oil on the market, but that’s not because it’s the best. It’s just the cheapest to produce.

It’s also the least effective form of fish oil.

Research shows that triglyceride and reesterified triglyceride fish oils are better absorbed by the body than ethyl ester oil, resulting in larger increases in plasma (blood) EPA and DHA levels. [26][27][28][29]

One reason for this is ethyl ester fish oil is much more resistant to breakdown in the body than triglyceride and reesterified triglyceride oils. [30]

Another problem with ethyl ester fish oil is it releases ethanol (alcohol) into the body, which must be processed by the liver. This can cause various side effects, including burping, flu-like symptoms, upset stomach, strange tastes in your mouth, and skin rash. [31][32]

Yet another downside to ethyl ester fish oil is it oxidizes (goes bad) more easily and quickly at all temperatures. [33]

So, a simple way to summarize cheap ethyl ester fish oil products is “you get what you pay for.”

(And in case you’re wondering how to tell whether a fish oil is an ethyl ester product, if it doesn’t specifically state the form of the oil, assume it’s ethyl ester. Companies that pay a premium for the superior, more expensive triglyceride forms call it out in their marketing because it increases salability.)

That leaves reesterified triglyceride oil, which has significant advantages over both natural triglyceride and ethyl ester oils:

  1. It has a very high bioavailability (in one study, 124% higher than natural triglyceride and 170% higher than ethyl ester oil). [34]

  2. It has very high amounts of EPA and DHA.

  3. It has very low levels of toxins and pollutants.

  4. It’s resistant to oxidation and thus rancidification.

  5. It has none of the potential side effects associated with supplementation with ethyl ester oils.

It’s no surprise, then, that reesterified triglyceride oil is the current “gold standard” of fish oil supplementation.

The Problem with Chemical Contaminants in Fish Oil

Many man-made chemicals tend to persist in environments and accumulate in organisms.

They’re known as persistent organic pollutants (or POPs), and they can be found in a variety of consumer products ranging from pesticides to solvents, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, and more.[35]

As they’re resistant to environmental degradation, POPs move through our soil, plants, water, and atmosphere and are able to travel long distances. [36]

They’re captured particularly well by oils and fats, so after making their way into our bodies through the food we eat, the medicines we take, the beverages we drink, and the air we breathe, they can become lodged in our fatty tissues. [37]

This is problematic because studies show many of these chemicals increase the risk of various types of disease and dysfunction, including metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer, and obesity, and disrupt our reproductive, central nervous, and immune systems. [38][39][40][41]

Modern living makes it impossible to avoid these chemicals altogether, but it’s worth taking simple actions to minimize our exposure, including . . .

  • Eating organic produce
  • Limiting our intake of canned foods
  • Drinking filtered water
  • Using natural cleaners

We should also watch the fish we eat and fish products we consume.

Due to a process known as biomagnification, large, predatory fish contain much higher levels of contaminants (including mercury, POPs, and other chemicals) than small, non-predatory fish. [42]

This is why the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences recommends we avoid fish like king mackerel, swordfish, and bigeye and ahi tuna, and limit our intake of fish like grouper, sea bass, and white tuna.

Instead, we should opt for “cleaner” fish like cod, halibut, skate, and snapper.

Studies also show that farmed fish tend to have higher levels of toxic substances than wild-caught ones, mainly due to the chemicals in the fishmeal used to feed and raise the fish. [43]

Thus, if you’re going to take a fish oil, you want to ensure it contains as low levels of toxic chemicals as possible.

This mostly comes down to two factors:

  1. The fish the oil is made from

    Research shows that small, cold-water, non-predatory fish like anchovy, sardine, and certain types of mackerel are generally the best in this regard. [44][45]

  2. How the oil was processed

    We recall that natural triglyceride oil can contain higher levels of contaminants than more processed forms like ethyl ester and reesterified triglyceride.

Ideally, then, your fish oil supplement would be sourced from low-toxicity fish and processed to remove contaminants using the latest and most effective methods.

The result won’t be a supplement with absolutely no contaminants whatsoever, but studies show that they can be reduced enough to register well below the levels generally considered safe. [46]

Not All Methods of Fish Harvesting Are Equal

A number of common fishing practices are extremely destructive to natural marine habitats.

For example, bottom trawling involves dragging large nets fitted with rubber tires or rollers along the ocean floor, including coral reefs, where fish congregate.

These rollers can be very large and very damaging to the delicate coral ridges they pass over.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, scars up to 4 kilometers long have been found in reefs of the northeast Atlantic Ocean. [47] In heavily fished areas off southern Australia, 90% of the surfaces where coral used to grow are now bare rock.

Two other ways reefs are destroyed are cyanide and dynamite fishing, which, as you can guess, involve the use of cyanide and dynamite to catch fish.

Cyanide stuns fish but doesn’t kill them, making them easy to collect, but it also kills the organisms that grow on coral, transforming the vibrant “rainforests of the sea” into marine deserts.

Fish killed by dynamite float to the surface and can be scooped up, but it also reduces underwater environments to rubble.

Overfishing is yet another harmful practice that bites the hand that feeds by taking wildlife from the sea faster than they can replenish through reproduction.

It makes for good paydays but can take wildlife from the sea faster than they can replenish through reproduction.

For example, Chilean sea bass become so popular in the 1990s that it faced commercial extinction by the early 2000s. This prompted hundreds of chefs to band together in opposition to serving it in their restaurants.

So, the point is this:

We don’t need to destroy ecosystems to get our food and supplements, and as fish oil consumers, we can make a difference by supporting well-managed, sustainable fisheries.

Sustainable policies and methods include prohibiting fishing around reefs and regulating how certain fish can be caught (rod and reel or harpoon, for instance), how large fish must be to be removed from the ocean, and how much tonnage of individual species may be caught each year.

    The EPRS and CRN recommend that dioxins in fish oil supplements should be at or below a level of 2 parts per trillion.

  • Fewer than 3 parts per trillion of dioxin-like PCBs and 0.09 parts per million or less of total PCBs

    PCBs are chemicals that once had a variety of industrial uses, including weather- and fire-proofing, electronic insulation, fluorescent lighting, and more.

    Dioxin-like PCBs are twelve of these chemicals that have dioxin-like properties.

    PCBs were banned in the 1970s after being linked to cancer, but as they persist in the environment and bioaccumulate, we’re regularly exposed to them.

    The CRN recommends that dioxin-like PCBs and total PCBs in fish oil supplements should be at or below a level of 3 parts per trillion and 0.09 parts per million, respectively.

  • Fewer than 2 parts per billion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) per softgel

    PAHs are chemicals formed from the incomplete combustion of plant or animal matter or carbon fuels.

    Accordingly, automobile exhaust, industrial emissions, and smoke from burning wood, charcoal, and tobacco contain high levels of PAHs.

    PAHs are abundant in our environment, and while our bodies are adapted to deal with a certain degree of exposure to them, research shows that these chemicals can increase the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and poor fetal development. [48][49][50]

    The EPRS, CRN, and GOED don’t contain recommendations for PAH levels in fish oil supplements.
