What has happened so far on the program?

I began the program and immediately my strength began to increase as I systematically tracked my progress and increased the weight and reps each week. I then followed Mike’s guidelines to determine a reasonable caloric surplus and spent four months bulking, slowly putting on muscle with very minimal fat gain. I put on quite a bit of size but I had always desired a six pack and wanted to prove to myself that I could obtain one while maintaining my strength. Sure enough in 6 weeks, following the Bigger Leaner Stronger training plan and setting and appropriate caloric deficit, I shed 5% body fat and had the lean (not skinny fat) physique I desired. At this point I have increased my Bench Press by ~70 lbs, my deadlift by ~150 pounds, my squat by ~70 pounds, and my military press by ~50 pounds.

What do you like most about the program?

The program is systematic and there are no gray areas. Everything, from weight training to nutrition, comes down to manipulating numbers. You know exactly how to adjust your diet to gain, lose or maintain weight, and you know exactly how your strength is progressing in the gym. There is no “well I kind of look a little leaner” or “I feel like my strength has gone up.” You can simply look at your numbers and see progress and make adjustments. Every gym session begins with very specific goals.

What, if anything, almost kept you from buying the book or starting the program?

There really was nothing stopping me. I was always inherently skinny, weak and soft, and desired strength and a powerful, lean physique. As soon as I came across Mike’s writings and bought his book, I quickly realized how factual and well-supported his information was. Mike provides legitimate studies and research to support absolutely everything he suggests. Other fitness “experts” and “gurus” simply cannot justify their claims in any way even remotely close.

What are three other benefits of the program?

1. Mike Matthews will help you along the way. Countless times I messaged Mike with specific questions I had and he would always reply extremely quickly. This way, I was always able to make adjustments specific to my needs. The fact that he takes the time to help his readers along the way shows that his intentions are to help as many people as possible and provide them with all the information they need. Every day Mike writes new articles on his website that help you along the way and dive into the specifics outlined in Bigger Leaner Stronger. Between the books, the articles, the forums, and the comments sections, there is ample information to help along the way.

2. You will realize very quickly that it works. When you begin, each week you will see your strength go up in the gym. With the diet, when you find your ideal caloric surplus or deficit, you will gain or lose weight, end of story. And if you hit a plateau, it is very easy to manipulate your training or your diet to break through immediately. You will no longer be in the gym fooling around with weights. You will be focused on every rep because adding an extra rep or 5 pounds to the bar means you are making progress.

3. There are no shortcuts. This program will help you realize that there is no such thing as instant gratification when it comes to long-term fitness goals. That is why Mike’s program is so credible. This isn’t some fancy mind-blowing BS program. It is science backed with experience. You’re not going to put on 40 pounds of muscle naturally in 6 weeks or shed 100 pounds on a 6 week crash diet like you might see in magazines, but you will develop a routine that will have you making sustainable progress and consistently hitting your goals for the rest of your life.

Would you recommend this program? If so, why?

Absolutely yes. If you follow the program and use all of the information Mike has gathered to your benefit, you will be able to achieve your fitness goals. You will never feel lost or confused on this program and it is set up in a very flexible and adjustable manner. Anytime I hear someone talking about fitness goals I just want to sit them down and introduce them to this program. Be ready to get frustrated seeing people waste their time in the gym. My friend and I became addicted to going into the gym with very specific numbers in mind that we wanted to hit in order to signal a successful week.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Read Mike’s books. Keep up with his posts on his website. Listen to his podcasts. Absorb all the information you can from Muscle For Life because I am confident it will bring you the results you desire. I now have the confidence that I can manipulate my body in any way I desire. Like Mike says it all comes down to picking things up and putting them down and tracking your food. Although success requires commitment and intensity, the formula to any fitness goal is very simple and the Bigger Leaner Stronger program will open your eyes to that.
