If you want a surefire way to feel lousy, start comparing yourself to other fitness folk because there’s always someone who looks better, who can lift more weight, who has more of whatever you want. The deck is stacked. You just can’t win. So instead, Turn your gaze inward. Look at who you were. Look at who you are.

Look at who you hope to become, and everyone wants to tell you what to do too. What to eat, what not to eat, what burns fat, what doesn’t, what is evidence-based, what is not, but ultimately, whatever works for you. Is valid. Your fitness is yours, yours to explore, to evolve, to enjoy. So don’t let anybody railroad you into a lifestyle that doesn’t serve you.

And don’t be afraid to allow that lifestyle to evolve in step with your goals and your priorities. You know your needs. So trust yourself and you don’t have to get it all right the first time, either or the second. You have as many chances to build muscle and lose fat as you’d like. And guess what? It’s okay to flounder too, because some days you will try to weigh anchor, but the windless is just jammed.

It happens. It’s even okay to quit a program, especially when it has become a hamster wheel. Just don’t quit all of the programs and whatever you do, don’t. Get so gripped by the cacophony of conflicting rules and methods that you spend more time thinking than training. Don’t allow the temptation of a better way to eat and exercise.

Become the fiery unblinking and paralyzing gaze of so on. Push it aside, train now. Reflect later. And then once you have found a setup that works for you, offer it to other people. Leave a light on and a ladder out for those coming up behind you. Show them your map so they can better draw theirs. I. Okay, listen up.
