Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps keep free radicals under control and prevent cellular damage.

It has traditionally been supplemented in high amounts in the mistaken belief that more antioxidants is always better. Despite a recommended daily intake of only 15 milligrams (around 22 IU), doses ranging from 200 to 1,000 IU have been commonly used in multivitamins for some time now.

Such super-doses have no benefits unique to vitamin E, and ironically, often reduce levels of two forms of vitamin E that do have unique protective properties in the body, gamma-tocopherol and gamma-tocotrienol.

Thus, superloading vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol in particular) can be harmful, and this helps explain why epidemiological studies have noted increased rates of mortality with doses above 400 IU per day. [21]

Vitamin K

Vitamin K refers to substances known as quinones, which are divided into phylloquinone, or vitamin K1, and a class of menaquinones known as vitamin K2, or MK-x.

Quinones were once thought to be responsible for the prevention of excessive bleeding and little else, but we now know they have much wider-reaching effects in the body, including cardiovascular health, bone density, insulin sensitivity, and more.

While vitamin K is recommended at around 100 micrograms per day to prevent excessive bleeding, intakes of up to 1,000 micrograms appear to cause dose-dependent benefits related to bone health. [22]

Zinc

Zinc is a mineral used to create enzymes, proteins, and cells, release vitamin A from the liver, and regulate immune function.

Calcium is most well known as a vital constituent of bone, but also serves as a vital electrolyte in the body.

Triumph contains little calcium for two reasons:

  1. Adding the RDA would’ve required two additional pills per serving.

  3. Calcium isn’t a common deficiency among gymgoers as dairy products they often eat, including whey and casein protein, are rich in it.
